the frouds…

We went to a demo workshop at Complete Sculptor today to see Wendy Froud create her famous fairy dolls. Just in case you are not familiar with the name, Wendy Froud is an American doll-artist, sculptor, and puppet-maker, best known for her work creating creatures for the Jim Henson films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.

The demo was 3 hours and she was engaging, kind and informative. She made a wonderful creature in such a short amount of time. Though her methods were similar to what Justin had done to make the Bushman, we definitely learned a great deal. I can’t wait to try and make a doll from what I learned today.

After the demo, we got the chance to meet her briefly at her signing and take a picture with her. It was cool to see that her son was there to support her as well as her husband Brian Froud, though he was semi hiding in the back.

I have finally made my squidmen (no official name as of yet). I was waiting for my order of plastic pellets from Joann Fabrics and it finally arrived this week. I wanted the hands and feet to be weighted so they would swing a bit when you held them. I used some vintage fabric we found a couple years ago. Both have hand felted details, like the blue centers on the flowers by the top of their heads and their eyes. The red faced one is all hand felted and I think I like that one the best out of the two.
