time travel tuesdays…

The thing about blogs for me anyway, is that it’s a place to record and talk about the present. Then it gets archived and becomes part of the past. But what about things that were before the blog? So to help me write more on this blog and to share images from before this blog, I came up with Time Travel Tuesdays. So let’s go back in time and see what we find…

Justin and I love toys. Our apt. is filled with them. Stuffed animals, Hello Kitty Doll Houses, Vinyl Figures and lots of Action figures. Though some toys stay in their boxes, most are out, posed in scenes. I didn’t really have action figures as a kid, except for a She-Ra, Catra and Entrapta figures but Justin grew up with them (like most guys his age). When he was a kid (and well beyond), he would have them in scenes all over the house. So when we moved in together, mmm 4 years ago, it was only natural that every room in the house have an action figure scene. Though we don’t set up scenes as often as we used to (we tend to work on our own things now), it was a lot of fun and they often started out rather spontaneously on the kitchen table like the scene below.

Hanna Barbera Hero band

Classic Hanna Barbera Batman on the drums, Robin on keyboard, Blue Falcon as the turntablist, Dino Mutt powering up the speakers, with Space Ghost doing an air show in the back. This was done sometime in the fall of 2005.

Hope you enjoyed this first installment of Time Travel Tuesdays. We’ll have more action figure scenes from the past in the future.

creating a world…

Although I am a lazy and inconsistent blogger, I have not been lazy with my work. Actually it’s been really good. I have so many ideas and plans that now the problem is trying to find the time to do them all.

I have been working on a series of paintings/mixed media pieces for the last month. The idea was inspired by Sailor’s Valentine. I had done a sketch of a Victorian looking girl with Octopus for hair and simply loved her. Originally the idea was that she was the human character in my cephalopod world and I would make Valentine’s of her. But then I ended up making 4 different valentine’s and the world changed. I finished one of the four last night.

valentine 1

Done in acrylic over wood, it has real sea shells and a satin ribbon trim on the edge (which cannot be seen in this picture). I am in love with her. It took longer than I anticipated to finish her. The shells were of course time consuming to make into flowers and place. They are so tiny! The other three are already painted and varnished. Hopefully I can work on them this Labor Day weekend and finish them.

For some time now, I have had a few ideas and sketches of characters and environments. The problem was that they were all separate and nothing really tied into each other, at least that was the case until last night. I lay in bed, waiting to fall asleep and thinking about my plushes and other such things when I finally figured out how to pull all my worlds together into one. Though I still have to work on the details, I have this much so far:

In the beginning, there was only water. A vast world with one ocean. In that ocean lived 4 sisters and though they were happy most of the time they only had each other. Though vast, the ocean was fairly empty and the sisters were often bored. One day, the eldest of the 4 had wandered far, farther than any of them had ever gone. She came upon a beautiful spot full of orange sand. She sat in the center of this and as she ran her fingers through the sand, she noticed how well it clumped together. So she began to make shapes and stack them together, sculpting and forming what, even she did not know. But when she was satisfied with what she had made, she placed it on the ground and blew a soft breath onto it, bringing it to life. And that is how the first creature was made. It’s name was Octopie and he is forever in love with the sister that made him.

daddy type blog

I was surprised and happy to see Octopie mentioned on daddytypes.com. Thank you for the mention and the kind words. Coincidence?, but soon after we sold out of Octopie! So this weekend it’s back to work. There will be more Octopie and other friends up on our etsy shop real soon.

childhood light …

swing lamp

I’ve loved swings ever since I was a little girl. When I was 6, when we were still in the Philippines, a friend of my dad’s gave us a swing set and I used to play on it almost everyday. We only lived there for 2 years and after that I never had swing again but to this day, if I come across a swing, I would have to stop and play a little.

Maybe someday if my house is big enough I can have one of these swing lamps by BCXSY.

we’re back …

sdcc1

Another Comic Con has ended and as usual it was a frenzy of toys, art, comics and people. So very many people.

I wanted to thank all the lovely people that bought Mr. Ika. I met some of you and I was so humbled by your kind words. Considering the almost non-existent promotion I did for my new plush line, I did well and am happy.

I’ve been meaning to blog but just have been so tired and busy since getting back from California. So this is just a quick little something for now.
