idol worship…

Months ago I was approached by my friend Peter to be in a show he was putting together called The Astromonger’s Monster Challenge. Here’s the idea behind the show:
What arises when an artist is forced to follow instructions? How does an artist translate verbal description into visual images? This show challenges artists to create works based solely on brief descriptions of historical monsters, creatures, cryptids, and yokai. Each artist works from the imagination and in any medium s/he chooses to render the assigned monster. The artist agree not to engage in external research; they are barred from viewing existent renditions of these creatures whether online or in print. They work in a visual vacuum. The result is an archive of contemporary representations of the many bizarre and wonderful monsters of the world.

This was my creature description:
Airavat ( India )- They were known as the multi-headed white elephants that were usually the steeds of the Vedic gods. The white elephants not only had muti-heads but numerous extra limbs, trunks, tusks , etc depending on the artistic renditions. They were known as immensely powerful creatures ( near unstoppable to their destinations) and were always a symbol of royalty. there image has spread to other cultures as well including Thailand.

And this was the result:
airavat-pola

There are 4 heads, each with a different expression. there are 8 limbs in total and it stands on a sort of point giving it an almost weightless look. I wanted to portray this creature as an idol, an object you would put on an altar. Airavat is a needle felted sculpture that took approximately 2 days to complete. It was sold at the show. May it bring luck and swift and unwaivering journeys to it’s new owner. Perhaps someday I can adapt this sculpture into a ceramic piece. I think that would look lovely.

devil of a time…

This friday, the Showroom NYC and Osaka Popstar is hosting a show, Devil Dog Art Show.

This is my entry to the show. Inspired by Dumbo’s Pink Elephants on parade. This devilish elephant is actually a devil dog in disguise. He wears a suit made of needle felted wool.

Green Wood Night Tour

Ah there is nothing more lovely than Green Wood Cemetery at night…no, really. Now for those who know us, know that we are not at all goth nor are we particularly morbid. This is just one of those places that’s just breathtaking and an oasis for us in our neighborhood. Like I say to people, I feel very at ease there, it’s like my backyard…only full of dead people. See we live a couple of blocks from the cemetery and often go for walks in there, but they close the grounds at 5pm and this is the only way to visit it at night. Once a year they have a night tour during a full moon, and many people go (this year there were definitely more people than last year). See them all (pictured above) attentively listening to Jeff Richman (in the top hat) who conducts the tour. Oh and see the gothic chapel in the back, that’s where we got married almost a year ago. Ah memories.

Though everyone is encouraged to bring a flashlight, it’s really quite unnecessary. The light of the full moon is bright enough to see by but being in the city, people tend to forget that. So next year for all of you that decide to go…please turn off your flashlights and if it’s too scary for you then please don’t shine them into my eyes.

do it yourself bart…

Well boys and girls, here it is. Our Bart Qee for the upcoming show at the Showroom NYC this weekend. It’s called B.A.R.T. for Biomechanical Artificial Roving Terrain. This is a collaborative piece and I could not be any happier with the results. The concept for B.A.R.T. is based on the idea of a self contained and movable environment. The look came about through our mutual love of Victorian design.

On top is the beautiful sky dome where cute Unibear is looking out at the world. If you are in NYC this weekend, come and see the show at the Showroom NYC in the East Village.

The World Premiere of these custom D.I.Y. figures was at the Taipei Toy Festival. Shortly after that the custom figures were on display at the San Diego Comic Con. The TOY2R D.I.Y. Qee Project will then tour art galleries in the US and overseas. The tour is now stopping in NYC this weekend and we are one of the artists participating. Our Bart’s next stop is Hong Kong then all the Bart’s will be up for auction. Will post something when I get more details on it.

we’re back …

sdcc1

Another Comic Con has ended and as usual it was a frenzy of toys, art, comics and people. So very many people.

I wanted to thank all the lovely people that bought Mr. Ika. I met some of you and I was so humbled by your kind words. Considering the almost non-existent promotion I did for my new plush line, I did well and am happy.

I’ve been meaning to blog but just have been so tired and busy since getting back from California. So this is just a quick little something for now.

comic con international…

sdcc

We are on our way to San Diego after spending 3 days in LA with friends. It was nice to have some down time. A little walk on the beach, some shopping, a studio tour and lots of great food. The California sun is relentless and the white hot light has made us crave the more comfortable indoors of the San Diego ComicCon. ComicCon starts this wednesday (preview night) and runs through to sunday. Comic Con isn’t just about comics. Oh no, it is a great showcase of toys, animation, movies and all the wonderful things that might be associated to said things. If you have any interest in those things then you must come at least once to ComicCon.

So after many late nights sewing and assembling our toys in our humble Brooklyn home studio, we are now ready to promote our toys and meet some great people as well as partake of all the events at this year’s con. We are selling Mr. Ika Plushies and Pop Prolifics BUSHMAN exclusively at TOY TOKYO, booth #5335. So if you are going to the con this year stop by and visit us!

Our etsy shop is finally open! Hooray! Please come on by and visit us. In the next few weeks we’ll be updating the photos (cause they could be better) and adding new products. We’ll also feature some items that we will be selling at the San Diego Comic Con. More on that later :)

Thank you to everyone who has been so supportive and encouraging as we embark on this new endeavor. Love you all!

the frouds…

froud01.jpg

We went to a demo workshop at Complete Sculptor today to see Wendy Froud create her famous fairy dolls. Just in case you are not familiar with the name, Wendy Froud is an American doll-artist, sculptor, and puppet-maker, best known for her work creating creatures for the Jim Henson films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.

The demo was 3 hours and she was engaging, kind and informative. She made a wonderful creature in such a short amount of time. Though her methods were similar to what Justin had done to make the Bushman, we definitely learned a great deal. I can’t wait to try and make a doll from what I learned today.

After the demo, we got the chance to meet her briefly at her signing and take a picture with her. It was cool to see that her son was there to support her as well as her husband Brian Froud, though he was semi hiding in the back.
